Veronica Lake, born Francis Constance Marie Ockelman, was an American actress who was particularly popular in the 1940s. She was born on November 14, 1922, in Brooklyn, New York, USA. Her father, who was Irish, worked for an oil company. When Veronica turned one year old, her family moved to Florida. However, five years later, her parents returned to Brooklyn in hopes of starting a new life. Unfortunately, in 1932, when Veronica was just nine years old, her father died in an industrial explosion in Philadelphia. About a year after her husband's death, Veronica's mother, Constance Charlotte Trimble, remarried Anthony Keane, a family friend. Veronica was sent to a Catholic boarding school in Montreal, Canada. The young girl disliked the school and longed to escape its walls. When her family moved to Miami, Florida, Veronica attended a middle school where she stood out not only for her high activity level but also for her beauty. In 1938, the future actress moved with her mother and stepfather to Beverly Hills, California, where she enrolled in the Bliss-Hayden School of Acting and began to learn the intricacies of the craft.
