Early Life and Education
Martin Fitzgerald Lawrence was born on April 16, 1965, in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, to John Lawrence, a U.S. serviceman, and Chlora Lawrence. Named after Martin Luther King Jr. and former President John F. Kennedy, young Martin rarely saw his father, who was often away on military duty.
After his parents divorced when he was eight, Chlora Lawrence supported her family with multiple jobs, including raising Martin and his five siblings. John remained in Germany, while Chlora and her children resided in Queens, New York, and later moved to Landover, Maryland, where Martin attended Thomas G. Pullen Creative and Performing Arts School.
Comedy Career Beginnings
Lawrence's passion for boxing led him to consider a sports career, but an eye injury shattered those dreams. Instead, he pursued his other lifelong talent: humor. Performances at comedy clubs boosted his confidence, and he eventually joined The Improv.
His breakthrough came on the talent show "Star Search," where he failed to win but gained enough notoriety to land his first television role on the sitcom "What's Happening Now!" (1987-1988).
Film Debut and Breakthrough
Lawrence's film debut came in Spike Lee's "Do the Right Thing" (1989), where he played a supporting role as Cee. His performance alongside future Hollywood stars like Samuel L. Jackson and Danny Aiello caught attention.
A series of films followed, including "House Party" (1989), "Hammer, Slammer, & Slamde" (1990), "Talkin' Dirty After Dark" (1991), and "House Party 2" (1991). His leading role in "Boomerang" (1992) and his own sitcom "Martin" (1992-1997), where he served as writer and executive producer, solidified his status as a rising star.
"Bad Boys" and Superstardom
Lawrence's career reached its peak in 1995 with the release of Michael Bay's action comedy "Bad Boys." His portrayal of Marcus Burnett alongside Will Smith's Mike Lowrey earned him critical acclaim and an MTV Movie Award nomination for Best On-Screen Duo. The film became a global box office success.
Scandals and Controversies
Lawrence's rise to stardom was accompanied by a series of controversies. He was fired from "Saturday Night Live" in 1994 for using offensive language, and was arrested in 1996 for carrying a firearm on a public street while acting erratically. He was sentenced to two months of community service for attempting to carry a weapon onto an airplane. Lawrence has also faced allegations of substance abuse and sexual harassment.
Personal Life
Lawrence married "Miss Virginia" Patricia Southall in 1995, and they had a daughter, Jasmine Page, in 1996. They divorced in 1997. He began a relationship with Shamicka Gibbs in 2000, and they had two daughters, Iyanna Faith (2000) and Amara Trinity (2002). Lawrence and Gibbs married in 2010 but divorced in 2012.
Recent Years and Return to the Big Screen
Despite a lull in acting roles in recent years, Lawrence has remained active. In 2022, he completed filming a movie where he plays a detective investigating a series of gruesome murders.
In 2023, fans of the "Bad Boys" franchise were thrilled with the announcement that a fourth installment was in production. Lawrence and Smith reunited for the film, which is set to hit theaters in 2024.
