Biography

Nathanael "Nate" Saint (August 30, – January 8, ) was an evangelical Christian missionary pilot to Ecuador who, along with four others, was killed while attempting to evangelize the Huaorani people through efforts known as Operation Auca.[1]

Nate took flying lessons in high school and then joined the Air Force in World War II. After the war he entered Wheaton College to prepare for missionary work. He dropped out of college to join Missionary Aviation Fellowship. He married Marjorie Farris. In Sept. they went to Ecuador and established a base at Shell Mera (an abandoned oil exploration camp). Their children Kathy, Stephen and Phil were born there.[2][3]

In Ed McCully, Jim Elliot, and Pete Fleming came to Ecuador as missionaries. Roger Youderian joined them later.[4] The group knew of the native group called the Huaorani from Dayuma, a girl who had left her group. She taught Rachel Saint, missionary sister of Nate, some of the language. Later she taught Jim Elliot.

In Sept. Ed and Nate found a Huaorani settlement. Later that month, Nate found a settlement within 15 minutes flying time from dubbed this settlement "Terminal City". The five began planning to reach out to the tribe. The project, called Operation Auca, was kept secret from even their wives to avoid adventure seekers.

The group wished to prove their friendliness by giving gifts. While Nate flew tight circles near Terminal City, the others lowered a bucket on a line with the gifts. The bucket remained almost motionless and was received by the Huaorani who sent gifts back, including a live parrot. There were many successful exchanges.

By January 3, Nate had found and landed on a sandbar, dubbed "Palm Beach", a few kilometers from Terminal City. On January 8th, Nate, Jim Elliot, Ed McCully, Peter Fleming and Roger Youderian decided to try meeting the tribe. Unfortunately, the five were met by ten of the tribe who speared them to death.

U.S. Army officials found and buried the bodies. Nate's sister Rachel stayed and worked for 40 years until she died in Nate's son Steve went to live with Rachel during summers as a young boy, getting to know the tribe that killed his father, learning to hunt and shoot. Elisabeth Elliot also went with her very young daughter, Valerie, to live among and study the language of the tribe. They were very receiving. Six of the original killers became Christians.[5][6] Rachel told Steve never to ask tribe members about his father's death because they might think he was looking for the killer to plan revenge. At the time of Rachel's death, Minkaye trusted him enough to tell the whole story.[7]

Pieces of the Piper were discovered by tribe members in The plane was recovered thru family effort led by his son Steve.[8]

Nate and Marj Saint were the parents of Kathy Saint, Stephen Saint and Philip Saint.
