Professor Aliyu Kamal is a highly accomplished academic with expertise in English language teaching, particularly in the areas of writing and reading. He has held various positions throughout his career, starting as a graduate assistant and progressing to become a professor. He has taught a wide range of courses at different levels, including reading skills, writing skills, advanced reading and writing, introduction to language, grammar, syntax, creative writing, sociolinguistics, semantics, psycholinguistics, and English language teaching methods.

In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Professor Kamal has actively contributed to research and publication. He has authored several journal articles on topics such as extensive reading in English as a second language, genre analysis of seminar presentations, the use of computers in teaching writing skills, and the linguistic analysis of undergraduate writing. CLAIMS ARE MADE THAT SYNTATIC COMPLEXITY, AS shown in the long sentence, is an element of maturit... more CLAIMS ARE MADE THAT SYNTATIC COMPLEXITY, AS shown in the long sentence, is an element of maturity in ESL wiritng. this paper discribes an attempt made at Bayero University, Kano, Nigeria to find empirical evicande to support or disprove the claims. interenstingly, the results supported the writer's hypothesis, that the writing of subjects of the researsh will improve betwwen one eassy and another. leading to the conclusion that the long sentence appears to be an index of syntatic maturity.

This paper discuesses the classroom writing activity, and student writers are asked to write more than one draft. Discussion involves a detailed analysis of some of the student essays and the identification of the strategies that they employ in their second drafts, as well as how that affects overall meaning. the paper also discusses the possibility, from the quality of their essays, of students progession from unskilled second language (SL) writers to mature writers of Englis Finall, some sugession are offered on how to improve academic writing.

This strategy is not meant to suggest that the papers treated here are suitable ofr publication in ELT journals, but that student writers will henceforth rise to the task and produce "clean copies" worthy of inclusion in such periodicals

The preoccupations of Hausa characters in the Hausa Novel are bound to religious precepts and founded on communalism both of which affect the relations holding between them. The English language, as a vehicle of literary expression, offers a great deal of stylistic devices to the Hausa Novel, as shown in the analysis of twelve novels written over an eleven-year period.
